Being shy means feeling reserved, unsure or inhibited in social situations. It is not an illness and not a weakness. Many shy people are good friends, colleagues or managers. This article explains what shyness is, where it comes from and how you can deal with it well.

## What does shy mean?

**Being shy means feeling unsure, reserved or self-conscious in the presence of other people.** Shy people often speak more quietly, stay in the background and need more time to warm up.

Shyness is a trait or tendency. It differs from social anxiety disorder, where the anxiety is intense and restricts everyday life.

## How does a shy person behave?

Typical behaviours include:

- You prefer listening to speaking a lot.
- You speak less often in groups.
- You sometimes seem distant, although you are not.
- You need time before you trust people.

## What lies behind shyness?

Shyness rarely has just one cause. These factors often combine:

- **Temperament:** some people react more sensitively to new stimuli from birth.
- **Experiences:** criticism or being shown up in childhood or adolescence can reinforce reserve.
- **Self-image:** people who think they are not very interesting tend to withdraw.

## Is it good to be shy?

Shyness has strengths. Many shy people are attentive, thoughtful, empathetic and good listeners. It only becomes a problem when it stops you from doing things that matter to you. Then a targeted approach is worthwhile.

## What to do if you are too shy

### 1. Practise small conversational steps

Set goals you can reach comfortably. For example, ask one question per conversation, or say something once in each meeting.

### 2. Focus on others

Shyness often revolves around how you come across. Instead, direct your attention to the other person. Ask open questions and listen actively.

### 3. Notice your strengths

Write down situations in which you felt comfortable. What was different there? These clues show you the conditions under which you thrive.

### 4. Use preparation

For presentations or difficult conversations, preparation helps. A set of notes or a rehearsed opening gives you confidence.

## What does being shy mean at work?

At work, shyness can lead to holding back in meetings or not sharing your own ideas. Clear preparation, written contributions and one-to-one conversations help. Quieter people often persuade very well in one-to-one settings.

## When shyness becomes more than shyness

If fear of other people is so strong that you cancel appointments, avoid contacts or suffer high tension, an anxiety disorder may be present. In that case a professional is the right person to see, for example your GP.
